The White Hart, Wiveliscombe

White Hart Wiveliscombe Image

Wiveliscombe is a market town, set near the western borders of Somerset. Close to the Brendon Hills, it is the highest town in Somerset. It has a long history, with remains of Iron Age, Roman and Saxon settlements being found in the area. The wool and cloth making trades were major industries in the town, but it became famous after 1807 with the establishment of a brewery by William Hancock. He had a delightful red-tiled house built in the town, known as 'The Courthouse', which can still be seen and visited today. A new brewery was set up in recent times, and still operates today.

The church is comparatively new compared to other local churches, having being completed in 1829. During the Second World War, its extensive catacombs were used to house priceless art treasures from UK cities, to prevent them being damaged by bombing raids.
