The Tithe Barn, Dunster

The Tithe Barn, Dunster TA24 6RY Image

The beautiful medieval village of Dunster lies between the wooded hills of Exmoor, and the sea: Dunster Beach is only a short distance from the village. The area has a long history: Bronze and Iron age people settled in the hills above Dunster, thousands of years ago, before the Saxons arrived in around 700 AD.

There are many attractions in the village, the most prominent of which is Dunster Castle, the origins of which date back 1000 years. On one side of the castle is a working watermill, which was built in medieval times, and still grinds and sells its own flour. Near this is the old Gallox packhorse bridge. Also there is the old octagonal Yarn Market, where wool merchants, and weavers carried out their trade from the 13th century onwards. The Tithe Barn and St George's Church, both of which will be hosting festival concerts, were originally part of a Benedictine Priory .

There are many things to do in and around Dunster: there are many shops, and the West Somerset steam railway runs through Dunster station, a short walk from the village. There are beautiful walks on the surrounding Gallox and Grabbist hills, with panoramic views across the Bristol channel and over to Wales.
