The Collegiate Church of the Holy Cross, Crediton

Holy Cross Crediton

Crediton is a small rural market town, set in mid-Devon in the valley of the River Creedy, and on the main road between Exeter and Barnstaple. It has a long history, being the birthplace in 680 AD of St. Boniface: he was one of the founders of the Christian church in Europe, and he is the patron saint of both Germany and the Netherlands. The church stands on the site of Devon's first Saxon cathedral 909 -1050 AD, and the red sandstone building seen today was built from the 12th to the 15th centuries. The town was an important centre for the wool industry, from the 13th to the 16th centuries, and farming today is still central to the town, with local companies producing cheese, meat and vegetables.
