Station Booking Office, Tiverton Parkway

Tiverton is a large town in mid-Devon, with the River Exe running through its centre. Built on the site of a Roman encampment, it became a prosperous place in the 16th and 17th centuries, with a thriving wool trade. In 1815, the industrialist John Heathcoat, set up a lace-making company in Tiverton, and his company has survived to the present, still making textiles, but using modern materials and technology. There are two medieval castles in the area: Tiverton castle, and Bickleigh castle.

The Grand Western canal was built in 1838, connecting Tiverton with Taunton: it now is a beauty spot, where visitors can walk, cycle, or take a barge trip. Nearby in Bolham is a Gothic revival house, Knightshayes Court, open to the public. Blundell's school was founded in 1604, and moved to new premises in Tiverton in 1882. Two famous authors were pupils at the school: R.D. Blackmore, who wrote Lorna Doone, and John Wyndham, of Day of the Triffids fame.
