Barnstaple Parish Church, Paternoster Row, Barnstaple

St Peter & St Mary Magdalene Church, Barnstaple

Barnstaple is the largest town in North Devon, established in 930 AD. Resting on the banks of the River Taw, it was a major port in the past, with trading links to America.

It is surrounded by beautiful scenery, close to both Dartmoor and Exmoor, and also to spectacular cliff walks on the north coast around Combe Martin and Lynton. It is also near to two of the finest sandy beaches in the UK: Woolacombe and Saunton, well known to surfers and walkers alike.

The town is a major shopping centre, with many independent shops, and also the Victorian Pannier market, which offers stalls to local food producers, and arts and crafts suppliers. Local attractions include Exmoor Zoo, the Tarka cycle trail, and for the more adventurous, daytrips to rugged Lundy Island, with boat sailings from nearby Ilfracombe.
