St John the Baptist Church, Hatherleigh

St John the Baptist Church, Hatherleigh

With the River Lew running through it, Hatherleigh is a small market town, north of Dartmoor. There are signs of a Roman settlement on the edge of the town, and from the middle ages onwards it was a thriving centre for the wool industry. Many of the buildings in the town, including the church date, back to the 15th century.

There is a weekly market in the town, and, being on the Tarka trail, there are numerous walks in the area. From nearby Belvedere Castle there are wide-ranging views of both Dartmoor and Exmoor. Each November, Hatherleigh holds an evening carnival, which consists of torchlight processions, floats, and famously a unique custom known as the 'Blazing Tar Barrels', where barrels are set alight and dragged through the town. This custom is said to date back hundreds of years, when effigies of wrong-doers were set alight, in the manner of Guy Fawkes.
