Okehampton College

Okehampton College

Situated on the northern edge of Dartmoor, Okehampton is a rural market town in Devon, with the West Okement River running through it. The town is recorded in the Domesday Book, and its oldest building is the Castle, which is now a picturesque ruin, sitting above the river. In the 17th and 18th centuries Okehampton was a busy staging post for the stagecoaches running between London and Cornwall. In the 19th century it was well known for the manufacture of a white serge cloth, and in 1840 had the third largest number of weaving looms in the country.

The town has a wide selection of independent shops, including those in the charming Victorian shopping arcade in Fore Street. Leafy Simmons Park running along the East Okement River is a short walk from the centre, and is close to Okehampton College.

With its proximity to Dartmoor, Okehampton is also a centre for both walkers and cyclists, with many trails in the area, including the Granite Way from Okehampton to the beautiful Lydford Gorge. Other attractions in the area include the Dingles Fairground Heritage Centre.
