New Assembly Room, South Molton

New Assembly Room, South Molton

South Molton is a market town in North Devon, close to Barnstaple and to Exmoor. It was established in Saxon times, around 650 AD. It developed as a wool trading centre from the middle ages, and was a prosperous place right up to the 19th century. It still thrives on its market days, held twice a week at the old Pannier indoor market, and there is also a weekly livestock market, confirming the town as a rural agricultural centre.

Many of the buildings in South Molton date from the Georgian period, including the assembly rooms at the Town Hall.

Local attractions include Exmoor Zoo, Arlington Court, RHS Rosemoor gardens, and the local Quince Honey farm, where visitors can learn about bees, and try honey tastings.

There are also many natural beauty spots to visit in the area, from the sandy beaches at Woolacombe and Saunton, to cliff walks at Combe Martin and the Valley of the Rocks at Lynmouth.
