Carducci Quartet

PROGRAMME

Haydn String Quartet Opus 20, No.4
Mozart String Quartet No. 17 'The Hunt'
Schubert Death and the Maiden

The Carducci Quartet conclude our day’s journey from the logic of the enlightenment to the “sturm und drang” (storm and stress) of romanticism. Inspired by the changes sweeping in with the Romantic movement, in his String Quartet Opus 20, No.4, Haydn rejects the simplified musical style prevalent at the time for something more soloistic and individual. Inspired and dedicated to Haydn, Mozart’s popular Quartet No.17, nicknamed ‘The Hunt’ then follows. The concert comes to an emotionally charged conclusion with Schubert’s Death and the Maiden, a quartet that marks a radical shift from his previous works in this genre. Haunted by his certain early death from syphilis, Schubert set out to stamp his individuality on the medium. One of the most frequently performed and recorded string quartets, the award-winning Carducci Quartet’s powerful performance is not to be missed.

This is a full-length concert with an interval.
